removing the defender

The idea
The piece holding the defence together is simply taken off the board — even if you have to give up more material for it. No defender, no defence.
How it looks
An enemy knight guards a square next to the king that you want to break into with your rook. You take the knight with your queen, with check, and your opponent is forced to take the queen. By material count the trade is bad — a queen for a knight. But the square is left undefended: the rook breaks in, and it is mate.
Breaking in at once achieves nothing: the knight simply takes the rook. First remove the defender, then strike.
How to spot it
This is the easiest tactic to check. Mentally remove the defender from the board and look at the result. If it is mate or a decisive gain, the defender must be captured — the price does not matter.
Often confused with
An ordinary exchange. The difference is the purpose: in a trade you count material, here you do not count at all. You are paying to remove one specific piece.
