The idea

A pawn reaches the last rank and turns into a piece — usually a queen. Players often give up a whole piece for this: the new queen pays for everything.

How it looks

The pawn is one move from promoting, but an enemy piece controls the square in front of it. That piece is deflected, captured, or has its line cut — and the pawn goes through.

How to spot it

In the endgame, count whether the pawn arrives in time. A single tempo often decides it: whoever gets there first.

Check separately whether promoting comes with check. If the new queen gives check immediately, your opponent gets no time to react.

Often confused with

Sometimes promoting to a knight is stronger than to a queen — when the knight gives check or forks at once. This is called underpromotion, and it is easy to miss: if you only think about queens, the move never occurs to you.
